Israel will get even with Iran, as it must, at a time of its choosing
Israel will fight alone, if that’s the way U.S. President Joe Biden would want it
What’s done is done.
From Washington and Brussels and Ottawa, and from all the leafy NATO capitals, the same old plaintive appeals for Israeli restraint and all the usual admonitions against escalations that would threaten a region-wide war were already flying thick and fast before the last Iranian drones and missiles were blown out of the sky following Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei Iran’s unprecedented direct attack on Israel this past weekend. For all that has changed, that much hasn’t changed.
Israel will punish the Islamic Republic sooner or later, and it will be appropriately brutal. For all the sober judgments that a threshold has been crossed, the region-wide war we’re all supposed to be worried sick about has been underway for several years already. Unless and until the NATO capitals decide otherwise, Tehran, Beijing and Moscow will continue their advances across the ruins of the liberal democracies’ catastrophic adventures in globalization, and Israel, as always, will be on the front lines.
Whatever Israel does or does not do, the free world will remain captive of the bedlam, cowardice and incoherence of the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Congress and the European Parliament. Israel will fight alone, if that’s the way U.S. President Joe Biden would want it. And that’s what Biden says he would want.
However Israel responds in the coming days and weeks, Iran will still be holding the presidency of the U.N. Conference on Disarmament while closing in on the breakout point for the nuclear bomb that Vladimir Putin’s Rosatom Corporation is helping them reach by building two new nuclear reactor units, for $10 billion, at the Bushehr nuclear plant on the Persian Gulf coast.
Germany’s Olaf Scholz and Chinese Premier Li Qiang will still be patting one another on the back for agreeing that trade barriers are frightfully vulgar impediments to prosperity, even while Europe is becoming a vast dumping ground for subsidized Chinese exports, and Beijing buys 90 per cent of Iran’s oil output, including the crude oil sold by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force to finance Tehran’s network of terror proxies across the Greater Middle East.
