NIGEL FARAGE’S new Brexit Party have their eyes on a shock Westminster entrance as he targets a potential by-election win in Brexit-backing Peterborough.
A by-election could be called later this week if a “recall” petition against shamed MP Fiona Onasanya is passed. Peterborough voted heavily for Brexit in the 2016 referendum, with a 60-40 split backing Leave. Mr Farage’s new party said that it was “highly likely we will stand. We would be fighting Peterborough to win it”. The Brexit Party has seen a surge in support since it was launched, powering to the top of the EU election poll ahead of Labour and the Conservatives.
The new party is the bookies’ favourite to top the results on May 23 despite standing in its first election.
Mr Farage has called on the electorate to send a clear message to the two main parties and stand up for democracy by voting for his Brexit Party in the EU elections.
Onasanya was found guilty of perverting the course of justice after lying to police about a speeding offence.
She was jailed for three months, serving four weeks behind bars.
The former Labour MP was expelled by the party and currently sits in the House as an independent.
Her brother, Festus, pleaded guilty to the same charge and was sentenced to 10 months in prison.
