Russian Czar Nicholas II was relatively new to the throne when the building where Canadian diplomats work in Moscow was built in 1898. There was barely a whiff of the revolutionary sentiment in the air that would lead to his death by firing squad 20 years later.
Canada moved into the three-storey building in 1951, but leaving has proved to be a bureaucratic nightmare that has cost the government nearly $47 million, a number which is only expected to climb.
As a temporary solution, Canada’s diplomats will move in with their British counterparts this year, abandoning the old embassy that a government briefing memo described as “presenting significant health and safety risks” to people working there.
Britain has been in a tense diplomatic posture with Moscow since the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, a former Russian spy, and his daughter Yulia Skripal in England in March 2018. The United Kingdom ordered 23 Russian diplomats out of the country not long after the incident and the Russian government has demanded roughly 50 Britons leave Moscow, freeing up some room in their embassy.
In the meantime, the Canadian government will attempt to complete work to move into what will be its new embassy, a building that sits empty despite the millions in lease payments the government makes every year.

Oh Canada. Where or when will we ever find a CANADA first politician to lead us into what could be a bright future, but which is instead being driven over the globalist abyss. Somebody who not only believes what he says, he means what he says and he does what he says he will do. Somebody like Donald J. Trump. A leader who truly believes that his nation’s best days really are yet to come. A leader who will do everything in his power to make good on that promise. Under Trudeau especially I defy anyone to hold out any hope that Canada’s best days are to come. The short list. Open borders. Climate change hysteria. Carbon tax. Making the poor poorer right along with the middle class. Shutting down the economic engine of our country (Alberta). Regulating and taxing small business to death. An underfunded, neutered and disheartened military. Out of control deficit spending ($1B surplus into a $27B deficit). No balanced budget for at least 2 decades! 30,000 Canadian homeless living under bridges on any given day. Not a single refugee (according to government stats the vast majority liars and scam artists) are homeless in Canada. Once again, can anybody promise such a bright future for our country, Canada as POTUS Trump does for America? Anybody? I’m all ears…
