Royal Canadian Navy anthem too steeped in Canada’s colonial past?
Those of us who served our country should never find cause to apologize for being who we are or where we came from
Woke’s war of attrition on the remaining symbols of Canada’s military honour is the national, self-inflicted wound that keeps on festering.
Just as I was managing to slowly collect myself after a truly hurtful (at least for those who still love Canada) Remembrance Day 2024, the current defence-averse government of the country I served and was willing to die for continued to unleash its post-Marxist, decolonizing, ideological commissars on the cultural traditions of this country’s senior service.
That is the Royal Canadian Navy.
It was just not enough that public school principals might desecrate Remembrance Day with pro-Hamas protest songs or directives that serving military not wear military uniforms on Nov. 11. Certainly, it is not far enough down the path of decolonization that today’s “professional,” long-haired military reportedly can no longer march in step on Remembrance Day.

Recently, it was announced by Minister of National Defence Bill Blair that Heart of Oak, the popular 18th-century marching (and drinking) song of the Royal Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy and other commonwealth forces, was up for cancellation. Allegedly, based on the contrived feedback of certain paid, serving, pension-eligible members of the Royal Canadian Navy, this naval anthem is too steeped in Canada’s colonial past.
Toronto’s former police chief seems tacitly warm to the idea.

In random order. Good grief, the marching in this video is embarrassing. Drill plays an incredibly important part in any military for a number of reasons. What the hell is happened to our military, drill and marching is too difficult in high heels?
Next, Blair and political idiots in the Trudeau cabinet like him are occupied destroying another Canadian tradition. Meanwhile the comparison could be made between our Navy’s our own version of Baghdad Bob going around boasting that we could kick Russian and China’s butts?
Last summer I drove down memory lane around my old base HMCS Stadacona (part of CFB Halifax). The magnificent old massive wooden beamed ‘drill hall’ that we all quickly learned to hate, gone. Is this display of uncoordinated walking in this video a ‘spin off’? The base pool and gym gone, replaced with a poorly run, understocked CANEX. That’s progress?
What else struck me and caused me sadness was the dilapidated condition of the base in general. The once well maintained, bustling and proud Engineering, Weapons and Operations Division buildings where I spent a lot of time looking little unused and run down. They all used to be packed with sailors in training all day. Sheets of well weathered plywood erected to provide sheltered entrances in lieu of glass (to save money)? Where did all of the sailors go that used to be everywhere?
Then there was the Maritime Warfare College which as soon as I saw it reminded me of an old gas station or motel you see along Route 66).
Upsetting to say the least. ‘Stad’ as we used to call it in its day back then was a busy, well maintained source of pride for the Navy. Today a shell of its former greatness.
PMPP has got his work cut out for him.

Oh…. and as our military facilities fall into disrepair for lack of funding Trudeau government announcement this very day. Immediate $50M more for Gaza.
