Arrest made in fatal Bobs Lake boat crash that killed three
The OPP arrested 44-year-old Matthew Splinter in what is now alleged to have been a drunk boating incident
A South Frontenac man has been arrested in connection with the fatal boat crash near Kingston that killed three young people on the Victoria Day long weekend.
The Ontario Provincial Police Frontenac detachment announced Wednesday they had arrested 44-year-old Matthew Splinter in what is now alleged to have been a drunk boating incident.
He is charged with three counts each of dangerous operation causing death and impaired operation causing death related to each of the three young people who were killed. He is also charged with three counts each of dangerous operation and impaired operation causing bodily harm related to others who were injured in the crash but survived.
The charges, laid Tuesday, come more than five months after the deadly crash.
Those killed that day were 21-year-old Kaila Bearman, 22-year-old Juliette Côté and 23-year-old Riley Orr.
Splinter appeared briefly in a Kingston courtroom Wednesday, speaking only to confirm his identity and that he understood there is a long list of victims, their families and witnesses he is ordered not to contact. One of those included a youth who was on the speed boat at the time of the crash.
He is being held in custody ahead of a bail hearing. The Crown told the court they plan to oppose his release.
This happens every year in Ontario. You would think these idiots would learn but they never do. My view? Throw the book at them each and every time.
Jail them for as long as possible. It’s the only solution.
