Three years ago it all seemed so simple. I stood on a hill in southwest England with Jerusalem playing in my mind after the Brexit results were announced. Then the crazy circus music took over. So it matters a great deal that the Tories win Thursday’s vote and get it done.
I know, I know. Brexit is not cool. Nigel Farage is not cool. National sovereignty is not cool. Rule Britannia is not cool. (“Cool Britannia” was briefly cool under Tony Blair, but only because it stood for repudiating Britain’s real history, including the “clubmen” I celebrated that June 24th.) The “mother of the free” is not cool. Nor is the mother of parliaments. Also history is a fish weir, and once you innocently swim into some place the smart set want you to be, you’re told indignantly “No leaping out again.”
Before I explain why even those of you in the right clubs, Laurentian, EU and/or It’s-All-Trump’s-Fault, should actually want Boris Johnson’s party to win the British election and go through with Brexit, I need to mention the horrible reason the Tories must not lose. Labour is unfit to govern because their leader and much of their core is openly, horribly anti-Semitic.
Accusations of unfitness and hate are cast too readily these days. But Corbyn really is a villain surrounded by other genuinely awful people. We are all too familiar with those who most loudly proclaim their tolerance being quickest to exhibit intolerance. But Labour’s anti-Semitism goes far beyond, say, the de-platformers, obnoxious and dangerous as they are. It is the original, vile, unadulterated wicked thing that motivated pogroms, circulated the blood libel and caused the Holocaust. When it intrudes on mainstream politics it must be chased out, even at the cost of supporting a party whose policies and ambiance you find distasteful.
