Canada’s climate story should be one of hope and achievement, not one of shame and disdain. The way forward is up and out, not through economic kneecapping and nickel-and-diming. As long as humans need energy, we should take pride in providing it.

Save the planet with Canadian oil and gas

We shouldn’t impoverish ourselves to meet increasingly onerous climate targets that barely make a difference

When it comes to emissions reduction, it’s time for Canada to look elsewhere.

This country could be vaporized off the map tomorrow, and little would change worldwide as far as direct impact on the climate goes. Comprising 1.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, there’s little we can do at home to change anything. Per capita, we’re only second to Saudi Arabia, sure — but the atmosphere doesn’t care about per capita.

This all means that Canada’s current plan to achieve net zero by 2050 won’t add up to much worldwide: about 30 per cent of our emissions “reductions” would just migrate, and even if they didn’t, a success rate of 100 per cent wouldn’t account for much. No, it’s the others who matter. The big fish: China, the United States, India, the European Union, Russia — jurisdictions large enough that their energy choices make a difference.
