No accountability for tax-funded bonuses
The issue of bonuses for CBC executives just doesn’t go away.
It was revealed last week that the public broadcaster has once again awarded healthy bonuses to its executives, despite getting more than $1 billion in tax funding.
At a time when taxpayers are struggling to pay the rent or the mortgage, when inflation is at an all-time high, those lavish payments are a slap in the face to Canadians struggling to pay for groceries.
A Canadian Press story revealed last week that the board of directors of CBC and Radio-Canada has approved bonuses for staff for the most recent fiscal year, despite MPs saying it would be in inappropriate to do so after hundreds of jobs were eliminated at CBC.
A CBC spokesman balked at revealing to CP the amounts paid to the 1,194 employees eligible for bonuses in the 2023-24 year, saying it was part of “internal financial operations.”
