Even though the freeway was the Tories’ signature campaign pledge two years ago — and they won every riding along the proposed route — it remains contentious.

With early election looming, Doug Ford is promoting the controversial Highway 413

As the Progressive Conservatives rev up for an early election next year, Premier Doug Ford has filmed a campaign-style video touting progress on Highway 413.

The minute-long promotional spot posted to Ford’s social media accounts on Thursday boasts that the Tories are “getting it done” on the controversial 52-km freeway linking Highway 401 in Milton to Highway 400 in Vaughan.

While building the highway was the cornerstone promise of the Tories’ successful 2022 re-election campaign, there has been little visible progress since — save for some blue and white billboards posted along nearby existing routes.

“Highway 413: part of our $28 billion plan to build roads and highways,” blare the signs that are a familiar sight along Highway 400.

With Ford considering an election in early 2025 — more than one year before the scheduled June 2026 vote — the Tories are scrambling to demonstrate that they have kept previous campaign promises.

That’s a major reason why the government has earmarked $225 million to liberalize the sale of beer, wine and premixed cocktails by Oct. 31, though critics warn it could cost taxpayers $1 billion to expedite booze in variety stores, more supermarkets and big box outlets.
