Trudeau does the same things while expecting different results
The reason Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is refusing to say whether he’ll meet with his own caucus of MPs to discuss Liberal political fortunes is that he doesn’t have anything new to say to them.
He’s repeatedly said, at least publicly, that he intends to lead the Liberals into the next election.
That means he’s preemptively rejected a change of leadership — his leadership — as a way for the Liberals to become more competitive with Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives.
He’s also not offering any new policies — for example, cancelling his highly unpopular carbon tax — as a way of showing Canadians that he’s listening to them.
So basically, Trudeau’s argument following a year of dismal national polls capped off by the Liberals’ shocking byelection defeat to the Conservatives in the Toronto-St. Paul’s riding, which they’d held for 30 years, is that the Liberals should keep doing what they’re doing.
This despite the fact he also keeps saying that the Liberals need to take their defeat in Toronto-St. Paul’s “seriously” and address it going forward.
The problem for Trudeau, as the old saying goes, is that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is a definition of insanity. It’s certainly a definition of political insanity.
