A breakdown in trust and multiple political blunders contributed to Legault’s fall, one former MNA said

OTTAWA — Nowhere is Quebec Premier François Legault’s stunning fall from grace more evident than in the words of Émilie Foster, a longtime supporter and former member of the National Assembly of Quebec, who now feels uncertain.Asked if the party needs to replace Legault, who was riding high in the polls as recently as June last year, Foster can’t say for sure.
“Honestly, I really don’t know. I really don’t. It depends if he can turn things around,” she said.

In June 2023, more than half of Quebecers were satisfied with the Legault government and the premier’s political party, the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), was ahead by more than 14 points in a Léger poll.

After the 2022 elections, in which the party won 90 of the 125 seats in the National Assembly, the centre-right political party promised a strong government that would reform the health and education systems and compete economically with Ontario.

Like many premiers or prime ministers, Legault took the lead on many files. And since his first election in 2018, he had governed with a firm hand, weathering the pandemic to become Canada’s most popular premier.
