Teachers' pay and benefits at top of heap, don't let them fool you
This isn’t jealousy as some would claim, this is reality. Teachers want more and the average working person doesn’t have it. Neither does the provincial government.

So if your kids are in an Ontario public elementary or high school, then their teachers are now taking job action.

The union calls it “work to rule” but that isn’t accurate because they aren’t doing all their work and they aren’t following all the rules. Teachers will be skipping more than staff meetings, they won’t fully fill out report cards and they won’t do anything for the standardized tests mandated by the province — both of which are parts of their job.

If I refused to do my job I’d be docked pay if not fired, so would most people.

But teachers are special I suppose, some of the best paid people in the province with some of the best benefits going. When I mentioned their benefits in a column the other day I was blasted by teachers for being vulgar, for bringing it up and for claiming they have plans that would make Bay St. executives blush.

Yet it’s true.

Did you know that taxpayers foot the bill for 94% of the cost of benefits for high school teachers and 100% of the cost for elementary teachers? Most people get a certain amount of benefits paid by the employer and they pay the rest, just like drug coverage. Teachers, for the most part, get 100% of their prescription drug paid for with no co-payment.
