Will new X-ray scanner help prevent auto thefts in Brampton and Mississauga?
The federal government has deployed a new $3.5 million mobile X-ray shipping container scanner for use by police in the Greater Toronto Area to help intercept stolen vehicles destined for overseas
Police services in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have received a little help from the federal government in their battle against auto theft.
On June 16, federal Minister of Public Safety Dominic LeBlanc was in Mississauga to announce the deployment of a new $3.5 million mobile X-ray shipping container scanner for use at shipping hubs in the GTA, including in Brampton and Vaughan, that can detect stolen vehicles.
“Many of my colleagues from the GTA have personally conveyed to me and to our colleagues in the government that auto theft was a very significant source of concern for many of their constituents,” LeBlanc told reporters.
“This scanner has arrived and will be, as I said, deployed at various locations in the GTA,” he said, adding the government has purchased additional mobile scanner technology similar to that used in New York and Newark.
LeBlanc said he hopes the additional technology will be deployed in the next couple of months.
