Coderre makes it official: He’s running for leadership of Quebec Liberals
After dropping numerous hints, the former Montreal mayor becomes the first candidate to officially announce he is in the race
QUEBEC — It was vintage Denis Coderre. In other words, what you see is what you get.
Confirming his intention to seek the leadership of the Quebec Liberal Party — something that has not been much of a secret for weeks — Coderre on Friday dipped into his political past as mayor of Montreal and a federal cabinet minister to sell himself as the right man to lead the Liberals out of the wilderness.
“I am not a saviour, but I have ideas.”
On certain things, Coderre has not changed. His opening remarks, which included blarney about his Irish heritage, went on a full half-hour, occasionally interrupted by passing tourist buses and police sirens.
“Hey, make sure you spend a lot of money,” Coderre shouted without skipping a beat as he waved at one of the big red buses circling the ornate Fontaine de Tourny.
