BORIS JOHNSON couldn’t resist taking a shot at former Speaker John Bercow when he congratulated his successor in Parliament.

Boris Johnson prompted roars of laughter from Parliament when he made a spectacular dig at the now former Speaker of the House, John Bercow. Labour MP Sir Lindsay Hoyle was successfully elected to the post on Monday after his predecessor resigned on October 31. Mr Johnson wished Sir Lindsay luck in the new job, and hoped that he would “adhere to a strict Newtonian concept of time in PMQs”.

He said: “The kindliness of the Speaker is absolutely critical to our confidence and the way we behave.

“Mr Speaker, over the years, I have observed that you have many good qualities.

“I’m sure you will stick up for backbenchers in the way you have proposed.

“I’m sure you will adhere to a strict Newtonian concept of time in PMQs.”
