Another day, another protest by ill-informed malcontents.
As MPPs returned to Queen’s Park Monday, the Ontario Federation of Labour organized a protest.
The OFL’s press release read: “Labour and community groups are welcoming MPPs back to Queen’s Park today by demanding the Conservatives create an Ontario for all, not just the rich, says the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL.)”
“Reduced funding to schools has meant layoffs for education workers, meaning, among other things, 50,000 fewer courses for students.”
Actually, total education spending is up in Ontario under the Ford government.
The opposition claims that doesn’t matter because per student spending is down due to a reverse in the trend of declining enrollment, with more students now than last year.
Funding per student has dropped from $12,300 to $12,246. It’s a reduction of $54 per student, which amounts to less than one 0.5%. That’s a rounding error that does not in any way justify the apocalyptic language of the OFL and others.
If we have lost 50,000 courses for that reason, it is time to ask the school boards why. Could it be unions and school boards are playing games and spreading something a bit short of the truth?
Last month, the Financial Post wrote: “Doug Ford’s Ontario government spent billions more than Wynne had planned in 2018-19.”
So where are the massive cuts?
