Supreme Court justices ‘expressed strident disbelief’ over Brexit vote, Tory peer claims
Supreme Court judges have inevitably become "political".
Lord Lilley claimed the Supreme Court judges have inevitably become “political”.

THE SUPREME COURT judges who ruled unanimously that Boris Johnson’s prorogation of Parliament was unlawful, had once all expressed “strident disbelief that anyone could support Brexit”, the former deputy Leader of the Conservative Party claimed in a recent report.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament for five weeks was unlawful. Lady Hale, the court’s most senior judge and de facto chairwoman, said the court was bound to conclude the Prime Minister’s advice to the Queen to suspend the Commons and the Lords “was unlawful because it had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of Parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification”. The Prime Minister, who immediately faced calls to resign, said he “profoundly disagreed” with the ruling but would “respect” it.

Speaking in New York as he attended the United Nations General Assembly, the former Mayor of London said on Tuesday: “Obviously this is a verdict that we will respect and we respect the judicial process.

“I have to say that I strongly disagree with what the justices have found.

“I don’t think that it’s right but we will go ahead and of course parliament will come back.”

The ruling was without a doubt a devastating blow for the Prime Minister, who had already suffered two embarrassing defeats in the past few weeks.
