SNP’s shambolic conference shows what a mess they have become

‘The party’s leader’s hopes for a majority to demand Indyref2 are bordering on miraculous’

As successful conferences go, this SNP event in Dundee was neither successful nor really a conference. Shambles would be a nearer description given that there were scores of empty seats and Humza Yousaf, who’s still the party leader and First Minister of Scotland, had a very unseemly row with a heckler.

It was more physical than unseemly in that Yousaf ended up manhandling the lady who was shouting at him. As things unravel from his conference address, I would guess that more people will be shouting at him, too, and not just Unionists. Nats too will be crying out for more clarity.

People of all political persuasions will be angry with his confusing and convoluted message over the circumstances in which he’ll be demanding that he should be allowed to hold another referendum on independence.

It all concerns the result of the next general election, which might come along next year.

There was so much variance in the verdict of those who were seeking to work out what Yousaf meant in his first major speech to an SNP gathering that we’re not an inch further forward in working out what his policy is.
