Breaking his silence, Mark Norman says assumption of guilt took financial and emotional toll — and he wants his job back

OTTAWA — The newly exonerated Vice-Admiral Mark Norman says he was alarmed by the persistent belief among senior government officials that he was guilty, and that their false assumptions took a significant financial and emotional toll on him and on his family.

On Wednesday, prosecutors stayed the single criminal charge of breach of trust laid against Norman, a major victory for the senior naval officer who has always maintained his innocence in the face of allegations he leaked confidential information about a project to procure a supply ship for the Royal Canadian Navy. In announcing the decision, Crown prosecutor Barbara Mercier told the court it was necessary in part due to new evidence the defence produced in March.

“This new information definitely provided greater context to the conduct of Vice-Admiral Norman, and it revealed a number of complexities in the process that we were not aware of,” Mercier said. “Based on the new information, we have come to the conclusion that given the particular situation involving Vice-Admiral Mark Norman, there is no reasonable prospect of conviction in this case.”

She did not provide any details on what exactly that information was.

The announcement ends the two-year legal battle against the officer and heads off what would have been a politically explosive trial for the Liberal government in the middle of a federal election campaign.

In an inspired performance, Norman lawyer Marie Henein did incalculable damage to the Trudeau brand

Henein put on a piece of political theatre that was as understated as it was devastating. She flayed the prime minister without ever mentioning his name

Once is a mistake. Twice is a pattern. Three times is a habit. Third time yet to be revealed. It may never be found out but you can bet your bottom dollar it is out there.

Already, just like in some circles (both left and right) in America with the bogus Trump/Russian collusion fakery, some in Canada are already saying “for the good of the country let’s just put this (the attempted bogus railroading of a military hero) behind us and move ahead”. Sadly for Canada Trudeau’s $1.5B yearly funding of the CBC and his $595M donation to a journalism in general slush fund says very much. Anyway…at least a few are saying what needs to be said and demanding that what needs to be done gets done…

Canadians need answers as to why the decision to go after Norman was made in the first place. The prosecution says they stayed the charge because they realized there was no reasonable chance of prosecution.
We need to know more though. You don’t just attempt to incarcerate and ruin the reputation of a top Canadian Forces member and then walk away from it like nothing happened.

So who will follow up? We don’t have a Canadian version of FOX News. Or a Canadian version of Judicial Watch. So who will file the Freedom of Information requests on behalf of all Canadians? Was there collusion between the RCMP and the PMO? Who else was involved? You can bet there are more. Including in the shipbuilding community. The Admiral was a victim from day one. Expendable. His record of service to this nation was immaterial when politics entered the scene. Throw him under the bus. No big deal. Get emails, texts etc. Somebody needs to get them all. This case stinks to high heaven and the Canadian public deserves, no should demand answers. If possible under the rules for creating a GoFundMe I’d like to see the Admiral re-focus his defence funds to now sue both the Feds and the RCMP (and anybody else involved) for malicious prosecution and defamation of character. And that’s just for starters. Defend his reputation. A defense is a defense is a defense. Canada has its own swamp to drain.

Watch the Prosecutor cut and run when the questions get too tough.
