Mad Max is heading to the debates.

David Johnston, the man in charge of the official, government-sanctioned debates, has issued a formal invitation to Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada.

“Based on our further evaluation, I’m satisfied that more than one candidate endorsed by the party has a reasonable chance to be elected,” Johnston said in a statement Monday announcing the invitation.

The news was music to the ears of Bernier, who said he is looking forward to participating.

“I’m very, very pleased with Mr. Johnston’s decision,” Bernier said.

“A lot of Canadians wanted us to be part of the debate. They will have a choice now, a real choice.”

Bernier was initially excluded from the debates organized by the Leaders’ Debates Commission, saying the new party didn’t meet the standards for the leader to be included. After he appealed, the commission looked at a number of factors, including party fundraising, membership numbers and even polling in specific ridings.

The official English debate takes place on Oct. 7 and the French debate is on Oct. 10.
