It would be a quiet week in Ottawa, I told my editor a while back, and would allow me to return to Scotland and help my mother move out of the family home of 52 years.
Instead, in the words of the fictional, foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker, it was like the breakup of the Beatles during the fall of the Roman Empire.
Paralysis in Ottawa and the renunciation of Erin O’Toole by much of the Conservative caucus made for an exceptional week for news.
It was vexing to watch events unfold from afar but it did lend some perspective. As I walked through Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, it was surreal to watch images of the parliamentary precinct in Ottawa under siege. The general tenor of the coverage was that if there is chaos in steadfast Canada, it’s twilight for democracy in less stable jurisdictions.
Media closer to home have focused on the volatility and potential menace of the truckers who want nothing less than the overthrow of the democratically elected government.
It is deeply concerning that, according to opinion polls, one-third of Canadians support the protesters, and have, by implication, lost faith in our political and judicial institutions.
The trucker convoy will leave a mark — not least on the Conservative Party, which has seen its probable future leader cozying up to the protesters. “Canadians are uniting for freedom,” said Pierre Poilievre on Twitter.

Watch:
Speaking to the media Friday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned that for those who continued their protests in Ottawa, Windsor, or elsewhere there “would be consequences”.
“With distain I will throw my gauntlet full in the face of the world and see the collapse of this pygmy giant. Then will I wander god-like and victorious through the ruins of the world. And giving my words an active force, I will feel equal to the Creator”.
Ford didn’t say that, Karl Marx did.
Breaking!
Trudeau is ready to “respond with whatever it takes” to end the Freedom Convoy following a series of late-night meetings with opposition leaders, key Cabinet ministers, and senior officials.
If true then this stupid SOB is about to make the biggest mistake of his life.
Trudeau warns trucker convoy crackdown coming following late-night meeting | Washington Examiner
A warning to our fearless leader and the pathetic mayor of Ottawa. If you guys touch one single child out there, you will enrage every mother in this country! I will personally gather min-vans full of soccer moms, and we will drive to Ottawa.
And if you think the truckers are giving you a hard time right now? You have seen nothing! Trust me—you do not want a city full of angry moms because there ain’t no angry like mom angry!”

“ a series of late-night meetings with opposition leaders, key Cabinet ministers, and senior officials”
OK, then who were the opposition leaders in attendance? The cabinet ministers? The senior officials? Were they or were they not in unanimous in support of doing “whatever it takes”? If not unanimous, then who voted yay and who voted nay? Canadians not only deserve to know, if we live in a democratic country we deserve to know.
Also, I’ve heard from friends and family in the UK and the EU. Including even one former Soviet bloc country. The world’s eyes are focused on Canada right now. Especially by my friends in the latter. They know exactly what is at stake.
To be fair… via Global News
The teleconference meeting occurred between Trudeau, Opposition Leader and interim Conservative Leader Candice Bergen, Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, sources confirmed to Global News.
Trudeau also said he spoke with the mayor of Windsor, Ont., Drew Dilkens, before the meeting to talk about the trucker blockade at the Ambassador Bridge, the busiest border crossing for the U.S. and Canada.
Actually gifting Trudeau with an out by calling him stupid is inaccurate. He is not stupid. He knows exactly what he is doing. Exactly what he is told.
Ottawa police chief Sloly: “We are now aware of a significant element for the United States in the funding, organizing” of the protest. “They have converged in our city and there are plans for more to come.”
No question there is foreign influence in Canadian politics whether it be pipelines, logging, the Truckers For Freedom or whatever. That’s the reality of the situation. There always has been foreign interference and there always will be.
So in this case by his phrasing is the chief trying to tell Canadians that it’s not so much ordinary Canadians who are funding this protest, it’s ‘evil’ Americans? Wedge politics. No doubt there are very many ordinary Americans that are sending financial support to the truckers. That’s what Americans do. They oppose tyranny. So are they the significant element of whom the chief speaks? $10.00 or $20.00 dollar American donors? He didn’t say so we don’t know.
Note how significant element in this statement can leave a reader with the impression that significant also applies to those alleged to have “converged in our city”. Intentional?
Do not doubt this, Canadians. Truckers For Freedom is ‘Made in Canada’. Truckers For Freedom is massively, majorly funded by patriotic Canadians. Canada’s Truckers For Freedom is the point of combustion for a wildfire of freedom that is spreading around the world.
