Perhaps Ross Atkins just needs to use an interpreter.
I am only half-joking. In the same way that Spanish-speaking baseball players often use a coach or team staffer to provide translation services when speaking to the media, the Toronto Blue Jays GM could start filtering his responses to questions through someone with a knack for catching the clunkers that Atkins so often provides, before they are released into the air to the gasps and winces of the receiving public.
Hell, Atkins speaks Spanish. He could try out Vlad Junior’s interpreter. It couldn’t go much worse than Atkins’ present messaging.
After the trade deadline passed on Wednesday afternoon, the GM spoke to reporters on a conference call. In assessing a week of moves that had removed two big-name players — Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez — and four other guys from the Toronto roster, Atkins spoke about how happy he was with the depth he had added to the organization. Yes, the return was an outfielder — not a pressing need — and a bunch of minor-league pitchers, but Atkins explained that it was desirable to have surplus players at key spots. So, while new Blue Jay Derek Fisher, acquired from Houston in the Sanchez trade, is added to an outfield mix that already includes Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Randal Grichuk, Teoscar Hernandez and Billy McKinney, Atkins said the pending logjam was a good thing. It was a little reminiscent of the Saturday Night Live bit about the bank that only makes change: “How do we do it? Volume.”
