Police say they received a flood of angry messages and phone calls in response to an Amber Alert put out overnight Thursday to locate a missing child in Ontario.
In a media release published Thursday, Brantford police stated that they were “inundated by numerous phone calls” to 911 and angry messages to their public email account. Callers complained about being repeatedly woken up after an Amber Alert was issued to help locate a missing two-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted by her father. The alert was sent out at approximately 3 a.m. Thursday, three hours after police received the call about the child.
Police found the child in Hamilton and returned her to her mother, calling off the Amber Alert. The father and three others have been taken into custody.
The complaints received and published online by police include: “Why did you have to send 2 Amber Alerts for the same event?”; “Respectfully do your job and stop harassing citizens”; “What in the *** are you thinking?”
And one person is being investigated by Brantford police after calling the station 11 times to complain about the overnight Amber Alert, police say.
The Brantford police could not say exactly how many calls they received.
Ontario provincial police said that they received fewer complaints than they have during past alerts. The complaints mirror those received by the Brantford police.
