BORIS JOHNSON is considering holding a snap general election if he wins the Tory leadership contest to capitalise on Jeremy Corbyn’s huge divisions within the Labour Party.
The Tory frontrunner to defeat Jeremy Hunt and succeed Theresa May as Prime Minister, has repeatedly dismissed any election before 2022. However insiders within Boris Johnson’s team have stated there is a “desire” to go to the polls and defeat Labour whilst Mr Corbyn is still the opposition leader. One senior member of the former Mayor of London’s inner circle told The Times: “There’s a desire to get this done while Corbyn is still around. Labour is utterly divided — Brexit is killing them.
“Labour is in no fit state to fight a general election.”
Mr Johnson, who won two terms as London Mayor, has championed his record of defeating the Labour-left throughout the Tory hustings, and his team are confident they already have a strategy in place to win at the polls.
Another member of Mr Johnson’s camp said: “Jeremy Corbyn being Opposition leader is a positive for us.
