In a crushing blow to Canada’s vital fossil fuel industry, the Biden administration has shut down the Keystone pipeline. This decision comes at a terrible time. Pandemic spending has put Canada’s finances on the ropes, and Keystone offered a glimmer of hope that Alberta’s fossil fuels could pull us out of this mess. That hope is now gone.
For America, thousands of jobs that the project promised have vanished instantly. Their economy, too, is reeling, and the killing of the project has been met with profound shock and sorrow in the states that were depending on the project to get them back onto their feet.
So, why exactly is such an essential project being terminated? In a word, “ideology.” This is the beginning of the “Green New Deal” that Biden’s more radical supporters demanded. These people believe that fossil fuels must be eliminated now — no matter that renewables are nowhere near ready to replace them. The decision to kill Keystone on the first day of the Biden presidency is a strong indication that those extreme voices will be running the show.
And that is basically the same argument that has effectively stopped pipeline construction within Canada — an argument that appeals to our ideological Liberal government. Perhaps we can’t be too hard on the Americans for shutting down Keystone when we can’t even build pipelines in our own country.
