Premier Jason Kenney faces continuing criticism from his own UCP team over the travelling ministers and MLAs, as well as his belated response to the scandal.
More ominously, there’s discontent over strict COVID-19 measures.
In some ways, it’s an uprising from the right. Deep suspicion of restrictions, a built-in reaction from people who put “liberty” at the top of their values list, is bubbling to the surface.
On Sunday, Postmedia Calgary broke the story of a message that Nathan Cooper, the Speaker of the Alberta legislature, sent to an unnamed constituent.
This is a very odd thing to come from a Speaker. Elected by the UCP majority, Cooper is expected to appear neutral.
That means he doesn’t openly criticize the Opposition, and certainly not his own party and government.
Stressing that he didn’t travel over the holidays, Cooper said the fact that “so many of my colleagues chose otherwise should be of great embarrassment to the government, especially Premier Jason Kenney, who chose not to sanction these senior officials and staff members until he was prompted to do so by widespread public outrage.”
