Politicians have lost the moral authority to lead in a pandemic
This is the moment when our leaders need to lead. The question is, do they still have the moral authority to do so?
This is the moment when our leaders need to lead. The question is, do they still have the moral authority to do so?

With the public’s faith in politicians undermined by the “rules for thee, but not for me” mentality of those who fled the country during the Christmas break — while their governments told us to stay in our homes — Canada’s political class faces a serious challenge.

How far can the political leaders of rule-breaking politicians push law-abiding citizens to follow pandemic lockdown rules which seem increasingly arbitrary, nonsensical and unfair.

“Don’t go to church” coming from governments whose members flew out of the country for sun and fun.

With outrage coming from ordinary citizens all over the political spectrum, how much of a bully pulpit do the prime minister, premiers and mayors have left to rally us, yet again, to “flatten the curve” – now having been reminded that we were never really all in this together.

How long before people start shutting out what our leaders are telling us to do, while the rising rate of infections appears unaffected by the ever-increasing restrictions?

This in the midst of a devastated economy and a health care system not only flooded with COVID-19 cases, but cancelling “elective” surgeries — which are often urgent — along with other important treatments and tests.

According to government stats alone 50% or more of COVID deaths are occurring in Personal Care Homes. Now, how many of the remaining COVID deaths truthfully are due to COVID and not ‘with COVID’? Would the truth support the lockdown? Would 50% fewer deaths in open society support this lockdown? Maybe, maybe not. But the lockdown is so devastating somebody should figure it out. Another thing…Health care’s dire warnings of infections sky rocketing after disobedient citizens dared to celebrate Christmas with family don’t seem to be panning out. Normally you’d think they’d start getting nervous. Nope, because they’ve got their CYA backup plan. If cases go up it’ll be ‘see we warned you but you didn’t do what you were told’. But if they don’t go up they’ll say ‘see we warned you, and you did what you were told’.

Even though they know darned well the 30+% of us choose to live as free men and women December 25th they’ve got their butts covered both ways. The lockdown will continue. No matter what, there’ll be no turning back for them.
