Speaking on condition of anonymity, a close confidante of Jason Kenney who is also a former Tory cabinet minister says it’s “inconceivable” the premier didn’t know one of his cabinet ministers had travelled during the holidays.
Former Municipal Affairs Minister jetted to Hawaii to take part in a “17-year family holiday tradition”, ignoring the Kenney government’s restrictions against non-essential travel. Eight other UCP MLAs and staffers also flew to sun-soaked holiday locations.
Kenney said he was made aware of Allard’s travels on December 29, but a memo dated 13 days earlier shows he was informed that she would be away.
The former Tory minister said it beggars belief that Kenney didn’t know about the travel.
“When they go away, every single cabinet minister has to fill out a form. That form goes to the minister’s chief of staff and then on to the premier’s office,” said the source.
“There is a pecking order and each minister who goes away has to have their work done by another minister.”
In Allard’s case, the memo shows Transportation Minister Ric McIver was picking up the workload.
The source described Kenney as “a command and control leader, much like the hands-on way Prime Minister Stephen Harper used to be.
“It is inconceivable [Kenney] wouldn’t know Allard was travelling,” the source said.
