The Ontario Liberals had harsh words for the Ford government Saturday in the wake of harrowing stories out of a nursing home in Scarborough where more than 90 per cent of residents have tested positive for COVID-19.
“It’s beyond the point of crisis,” Ottawa South MPP John Fraser, the Liberal critic for health and long-term care, said of the COVID-19 outbreak at Tendercare Living Centre in Scarborough, where 39 residents have now died.
“After all we’ve learned and how much time we’ve had to prepare,” why are we continuing to see crisis situations in long-term-care homes, he asked.
“It’s happened on numerous occasions in the second wave (of COVID),” Fraser added. “It’s happened in my hometown of Ottawa. It’s happened in Hamilton. It’s happened in other places in the province. It’s really just very discouraging, I’m sure, for all families in Ontario with residents in long-term care.”
Provincial Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca issued a statement echoing Fraser’s concerns on Saturday.
“Doug Ford is failing our parents and grandparents in nursing homes. He’s paying lip service to the families of residents while he sits on billions of dollars in unspent COVID-19 response funding,” Del Duca said. “If Doug Ford really wants to build an iron ring around nursing homes, he needs to start spending the money to secure them immediately. How many more families need to lose a loved one before he takes decisive action?”
