As the premier moves through his first week on the job, he shouldn’t overlook one of the forgotten rules from the movie Fight Club: “Fights will go on as long as they have to.”

The first rule about Alberta’s new energy Fight Club is that you always talk about Fight Club.

In fact, you talk about Fight Club even if you’re not actually fighting — although you do have to be prepared to throw verbal punches, when necessary.

It didn’t take long for Jason Kenney to change the tone at the top of Alberta’s government toward energy policy and relations with the rest of Canada.

His UCP government made good on a campaign promise to proclaim legislation, passed by the Notley government last year, that allows Alberta to restrict energy exports to other provinces.

Through the use of licences to export oil and gas from Alberta, the new premier can reduce petroleum shipments to other jurisdictions, if the legislation withstands a legal challenge launched Wednesday by British Columbia.

The bill is directed at B.C. Premier John Horgan and threatens to propel pump prices in that province even higher, after the Victoria government’s persistent attempts to derail the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

Kenney went out of his way Wednesday to stress he’s not going to use the powers immediately.
