Dean French's management style under fire

Dean French is a man with a target on his back.

The most powerful unelected man in the Ontario government is facing a revolt of leaks from caucus members upset with his style of management.

On the one hand this is hardly shocking, backbenchers in every government complain that the boss’ office has too much power whether that boss is a premier or a PM.

Backbenchers are forever complaining about the unelected political staffers, like French, or 20-something know-it-alls telling them what to do.

To a degree they have a point, they are the elected officials. On the other hand, this is how every government I’ve ever covered operates regardless of party stripe.

The difference this time is that word leaked out about an incident where French dressed down a female MPP to the point of tears. It happened last week at a PC caucus retreat to mark the end of the legislative session.
