Premier Doug Ford promised Ontario parents a back-to-basics math curriculum during the 2018 election and on Tuesday he delivered.
In the face of years of declining math scores in the era of so-called “discovery math,” the government had to act because math literacy is one of the basic building blocks to future success.
That said, the new curriculum outlined by Education Minister Stephen Lecce, doesn’t end with a return to learning the 12X table by memory, although that’s a good start.
Among other innovations to the province’s math curriculum that hasn’t been updated since 2005, it will introduce computer coding skills, starting at the elementary school level, as well as financial literacy to understand the value and use of money.
The challenge will be introducing the new curriculum, starting in September, when students will return to whatever the “new normal” will be for them, not having been inside a traditional classroom since mid-March.
