The bad behavior triggered the city to warn on Sunday that COVID-19 remains a threat, and tickets will be issued to people who break the rules.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he was “shocked” to see thousands of people — many without masks — gather at Trinity Bellwoods Park on Saturday.

People appeared to be obeying social distancing rules on Sunday as city enforcement officers were out in force in the park, located at Queen St. and Strachan Ave.

“I thought it was a rock concert. I was shocked,” Ford said Sunday. “It was a beautiful day (Saturday) and people want to get out and have a great time, but the images I saw, we can’t have that right now. It (COVID-19) is still a deadly virus.”

Thousands ignored social distancing rules on Saturday, triggering the city to issue the warning that COVID-19 remains a threat and tickets will be issued to people who break the rules.

“Images of thousands of people gathered in Trinity Bellwoods Park were unacceptable,” said city spokesman Brad Ross. “Gatherings like this, where people aren’t keeping their distance from others, run the risk of setting Toronto back significantly in its efforts to stop the transmission of COVID-19.
