NIGEL FARAGE insisted the Peterborough by-election result proved “something significant” has happened in British politics as he explained why the Brexit Party didn’t win, falling just short of gaining their first MP.
The Brexit Party fell short of securing their first seat in Westminster in the Peterborough by-election, coming in second, losing to the Labour Party by only 683 votes. Nigel Farage claimed he always said the party would “run it close” and added the result proved “British politics had changed”. Speaking on the BBC’s Today programme, Mr Farage explained the ‘reason’ why his party could not win the by-election.
He said: “Like it or not, something very significant happened here last night.
“Now, the only reason the Brexit Party wasn’t able to push a couple of hundred votes past Labour was because quite a lot of people still voted Conservative.
“There are now seats like this over the country where Conservative voters are going to start to realise, if you vote Conservative, you are going to finish up with a Corbyn government.
“Once that gets through, we will begin to see tactical voting.”
