I’ve been thinking about Mike Bloomberg. Which is one way of alerting the world to just how idle my days and thoughts are. In the current turbulent times here in Canada, the story of billionaire Bloomberg’s baffling bust against Biden and Bernie has been a beam of sunshine from another place, a way to remind Canadians that not all follies take place on our soil.
Any day before what the Americans call Super Tuesday the clattering pundits of panel and internet were happy to view the $60-billion tycoon as the tiger to take on Trump. Verily, in the prelude to Super Tuesday in the era (eight or nine days ago) when Joe Biden was declared “toast,” when Democratic sage Van Jones on CNN pronounced the former vice-president’s efforts as “dead campaign walking,” and voices in Canada, specialists in American politics, were pronouncing a “death watch” on erratic Joe, there were many pointing to Bloomberg as the likely and best choice as Democratic nominee.
I offer just one sample of the “analysis” that was considered serious just a couple of days before Mike Bloomberg suffered the greatest deflation in modern politics, spending over $500 million, and winning — only — the delegates of American Samoa. This is from Issues and Insights: “There is only one issue for Democrats, and one issue only: beating Donald Trump. I know whom I’d pick if I were a Democrat: someone with tens of billions, a highly competent executive, and a three times winner in a city with an electorate much bigger and far more diverse than the home states of all the other candidates and each of the first four primary states.”
